Throwback Thursday: Luther Vandross & Mariah Carey – “Endless Love”

Luther Vandross would’ve been 72 years old today, so it’s only right that we dedicate today’s TBT to him.

It’s no secret that the best vocalists are women. However, every now and then, a male singer that can hold his own with the great female vocalists, and the Velvet Voice is one of them.

In 1994, the New York native released an album of covers called Songs. The album included a cover of “Endless Love,” originally performed by Lionel Richie & Diana Ross in 1981. For his updated version, Luther tapped one of the preeminent vocalists at the time, a young lady named Mariah Carey.

Separately, Luther and Mariah are known for making covers that shit all over their respective originals, so what do you think happened when you put the two of them on the song? No shade to Lionel and Diana, but the difference is clear.

The Luther and Mariah version of “Endless Love” wasn’t as big of a hit as the original. However, it was the biggest hit of Luther’s career, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
